Junior Python / Data Engineer
Job Type: Contract Location: Toronto, ON - Hybrid Duration: 3 Months, Possible Extension
Role Summary
We are seeking a Junior Software / Data Engineer with 1-3 years of experience in software development, data engineering, backend application development, or a related technical role.
The ideal candidate will have hands-on Python experience, exposure to PySpark/Spark-based data processing , and experience working within a development team on data pipelines, APIs, backend services, or application features.
The candidate should be comfortable working from defined requirements and technical direction, participating in Agile delivery, and collaborating with development, QA, and DevOps teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, test, and maintain Python-based applications, data pipelines, APIs, backend services, or application features .
- Work with PySpark and Spark-based data processing as part of data engineering activities.
- Deliver assigned development tasks based on defined requirements and technical direction.
- Participate in Agile/Scrum ceremonies , including sprint planning, daily stand-ups, reviews, and retrospectives.
- Work with developers, QA, and DevOps teams to support development and delivery activities.
- Apply testing fundamentals, including: Unit testing
- Integration testing
- Data validation
Participate in Git-based development workflows , pull requests, code reviews, and issue tracking.
Support data and application workloads using cloud and database services.
Leverage AI-assisted coding tools to improve developer productivity and code quality.
Required Skills & Experience
- 1-3 years of experience in software development, data engineering, backend application development, or a related technical role.
- Hands-on experience with Python .
- Exposure to PySpark, Apache Spark , or similar data engineering tools.
- Experience building, testing, or maintaining: Data pipelines
- APIs
- Backend services
- Application features
Ability to work from defined requirements and technical direction.
Familiarity with Agile development practices.
Basic working knowledge of cloud or database services such as:
- AWS S3
- AWS IAM
- AWS RDS
- PostgreSQL
Experience with Git , pull requests, code reviews, and issue tracking tools.
Good understanding of unit testing, integration testing, and data validation .
Strong communication and collaboration skills.
Preferred / Asset Skills
- Exposure to workflow orchestration tools such as Airflow .
- Experience or interest in AI-assisted coding tools such as: GitHub Copilot
- Cursor
- Codex CLI
Ability to collaborate effectively with developers, QA, and DevOps teams.
